Coen Brothers' TRUE GRIT: Number One With A Bullet

The Irony of TRUE GRIT

A few days ago, I went to a screening at the DGA of TRUE GRIT starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and introducing Hailee Steinfeld. The house was filled with excited voting members of the film/TV community. At the end of the movie, a question and answer session was held by a monitor with Hailee and Jeff.

The movie was loving shot by the Coen Brothers and deftly acted by the cast. The cinematography captured the period as if an original sepia photo from the West had come to life.
But I found the conversation after the film to be more thought provoking than the movie and I will tell you why.

Jeff Bridges called TRUE GRIT “a family movie” No offense to Jeff I think he is a fine actor but I don’t see TRUE GRIT as a family movie. It is a movie filled with guns, alcoholism, violence and revenge. Fascinating side note, in Arizona it is legal to carry a concealed weapon in a bar that serves alcohol. So has America really learned much since the Wild Wild West?
Many of us prove our point with guns. Look at the War after 9/11 that is still going strong bringing back soldiers with physical and mental injuries. It is also ironic that the young women in True Grit ends up loosing her arm after seeking justice from the man that killed her father. There is a price to be paid when we seek revenge.

In 2009 there were close to 10,000 murders in the United States compared to approximately 63 in the United Kingdom, 381 in Germany and 7 in Japan.

Last week TRUE GRIT was number one at the box office.
Also last week Jared Loughner allegedly shot and killed 6 people, injured 14including Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
On November 16, 2010, Ronni Chasen publicist and friend of Jeff Bridges was shot to death on her way home from a movie premiere.

Gun Violence is a staple in American Cinema. I heard on KPFK.org recently that since Martin Luther King’s assassination in 1968, over 1,000,000 Americans have been murdered by guns.

Getting back to the TRUE GRIT screening and question and answer session, I kept my mouth shut and my hand down while I thought of the irony of what Jeff Bridges said about his movie.
Everyone was so busy giving warm accolades and in such a rosy mood that I didn’t want to kill the idol worship with a serious question of the irony of True Grit being the number one movie in America one week after the shooting in AZ where they have some of the most lax gun laws in the world.

Strange Day in Deed - Upside Roseanne Barr

Today started with washing clothes early and then I drove into traffic. If you haven't experienced LA traffic than consider yourself lucky. While driving through Westwood, traffic was at a stand still. I found out why 15 minutes later. There was a group of people celebrating the bombing of Gaza. Star of David Flags lined the street in front of the Federal Building. I did try to take a photo but I was driving and it is very dangerous to shoot pictures and drive at the same time. The people lining the street seemed jubilant that Israel was bombing the hell out of the Gaza strip and hence taking care of their "enemies". I felt disgusted. Lots of young faces held the flags up and waved at the cars going by.
Later in the day, I seemed to be too slow for getting pictures. I missed Jessica Alba and Kim Kardashian. Later, I misjudged Tyra Banks leaving a restaurant. I ran to the back and got a few seconds.

Maybe the best comes last becomes I got an interview and pictures of Comic Legend Roseanne Barr after she finished her new show on KPFK.Roseanne was very kind and was very proud of her "peace" bag that she was wearing. During her radio show, Barr denounced the war in Gaza and said that she was for peace and solutions to the conflict.

Roseanne Barr was on KPFK on Election Day.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself to realize that Barak Obama actually won the election. There was a fear that the election was going to be stolen by the Republican master mind of Karl Rove. Considering the WHITE HOUSE was built by African Slaves, it is a stunning moment to realize that their hard work was not in vain. They were making a future for the new legacy of America. Barak better do right. Just because the election is over doesn't mean there isn't work to be done. I disagree with Obama on many issues like Nuclear Energy use, warrantless wire tapping, war funding etc but I realize that he symbolizes change and I think he is alot better than Mc Cain and that Palin. Did you know that her state of Alaska has the highest rate of RAPE in the United States. And that Palin has women paying for their rape kit expense? Retard. I'm for a women's right to choose and for appropriate sex education. Palin isn't among other things. But this post was about Roseanne Barr. She was in town last Tuesday.

Barr did an election show on KPFK.org. You heard it hear first, Roseanne is considering running for office. Don't be surprised if you see her in a Senate or Congressional seat soon. Roseanne was lovely and she was wearing a Rasta Jump Suit.
